What the hell did I plant here?

GAH. Also, BLARG!

I have done NO gardening lately. I have thought about gardening. I have bought a couple of things in pots. I got a weird adjustable rake thing today at the bargain store. I used the Mower of Destruction to give the ivy a very close shave. But I have done exactly no gardening. I am feeling of the suck.

Anyway, I have to develop some goals about this planting thing. I've thought about it and I really think I need to concentrate on infrastructure this year. Get the shape of the land and the garden right, then get to planting the next season. I might even build a low stone retaining wall AL BY MYSELF (oooooooh!)

Ok. I will go back to my sleepy post-Halloween pre-Día de los Muertos quasi-depression thing now.

I know what I said...

But I ordered two beautiful fragrant climbing white antique Sombreuil roses for the arch and I splurged on another rose which has a ridiculous name but looks lovely and is reported to be hardy and fragrant. It's called "Sexy Rexy." I will plant it near the Playboy rose and they can be naughty together.

My name is Chaos, and I am NOT a plant.
I also object to this request that I pee in the rain.

It's Spring! Really, this time!

Can I just say that Gardman USA, Intrepid Fashioners of Reasonably-Priced Garden Arches, has excellent customer service? Because they do. Hopefully, my replacement pieces will be here soon and I can shore up my garden arch and start implementing this year's Evil Garden Plan.

INFRASTRUCTURE!!!!

So... not too much planting and lots of... I was going to say "terraforming" but that makes my yard sound like Mars. I think there will be lots of landscape fabric put on surfaces and covered with mulch. And a path leading through a garden arch, which is where that archy thing comes in. Perhaps I should talk about...

GOALS:

* build a retaining wall on the slopey side of the property facing the apartments. Find out if I need a variance for this.

* do Some Damn Thing with the new food plants--PARTICULARLY the GRAPES. They need a home. And a jungle gym.

* Herb Garden! Which will probably need some retaining wallish/raised beddy thing as well, due to the strange sinking portion of the lawn where a tree probably was ages ago. Or a Dire Mole.

* keep better notes on mah plantz, yo!

Ok, so here's what I am thinking.... maybe a homemade pergola for the grapes on the no-longer slopey now-retained wall side of the yard! Because of all the sun and awesomeness!

Right now, I'm just pruning stuff and marking paths with string. And taking photos!

I have been very lapsed in my confused gardening lately, and thus, also lapsed in my reporting of it. Today we did a bunch of stuff:

We saw a large robin-sized baby bird who has been adopted by some house sparrows. The adult sparrows continue to feed their baby despite it being bigger than they are. Tamsin has named the baby bird "Teresa."

We went to Mostardi's in search of roses that can actually survive in zone 6b and are disease resistant to boot and found two gorgeous winners, both floribundas: Frederic Mistral and Angel Face. Fred is gorgeous and smells fantastic and is only a little battered and mitey from all the rain. Angela is lavender and has a lovely old rose scent and is little, so I planted her in front of Bruce, my old reliable Playboy rose.

I also saw our resident northern flicker again in the backyard. He hopped around a bit, then decided I was too close for comfort and flew off, flashing his brilliant yellow underparts.

My ghods there are a lot of weeds.

Oh, and to further complicate things--the neighbors have cut down two trees, a somewhat sickly beech and a gorgeous, HUGE Kentucky coffee tree... so sad. And now all my light has changed, so I need to reevaluate everything. It's a good thing I enjoy garden planning!

I also got a hook to hang up a bird feeder outside the living room window, but I will need a great big ladder to do that (not to mention figuring out where the studs are).

Pruned many of the herbs yesterday. The rosemary survived, which makes me hopeful. I seem to be especially gifted at killing rosemary bushes. Other herbs pruned:

*sage
*lemon thyme
*silver thyme

Wow... that's it? I was sure there was more.

I also spent a fair amount of time in the hammock swing. I even walked the dog and then put him on my lap (a feat--he's a magical norwegian elkhound who can increase his density at will) and we swung together for a little while. He seemed to enjoy it, after the initial anxiety.

I am starting to be concerned about having fresh lettuce and should probably start those seeds soon.

In other news, I am obsessed with rvs and small space living. I am seriously contemplating a Little Guy Teardrop Trailer... well, seriously contemplating in the same way that I am seriously contemplating a greenhouse, that is "Damn! If I ever have the money to do this in the future, I should do this!!!"
